Bird Watching Derry

Bird Watching

Bird Watching

Birdwatching is not an unknown thing in Derry, nor throughout the Northwest, and the city has its advantages for budding ornothologist, if they know where to look. Lough Foyle is one of the two great magnets in the county, wide and shallow and enhanced by shell and shingle, the area is a delight. Average winter wildfowl exceed 25 thousand, and birds such as the Whooper Swan, Wigeon and Greenland White-Fronted Goose are in both national and internationally-significant numbers.

Areas to visit include Ness Woods, home to Goldfinch, the Long-Eared Owl and Blackcap while Culmore Dump provides a backdrop to sightings of Curlew Sandpiper and Red-Breasted Merganser.
